Madden 26 Guide: How to Shut Down Gun Bunch X Nasty (3 Cover Shells)
May-09-2026 PSTToday, I'm giving you one blitz and two cover shells (plus a bonus mix-up) that will shut down exactly what your opponents want to do out of Bunch Nasty. And if you want to build the ultimate defense to run these setups effectively, you can always buy Madden 26 coins to acquire the right personnel faster.
Before You Start: Critical Settings
Auto Flip: Turn it OFF. This is key to running these setups the way I run them.
Playbook: I use the Los Angeles Chargers playbook, but you can replicate this out of any defense with Nickel 2-4, any 4-down lineman set, or Dime personnel. These shells are flexible because any defense with match principles works.
Player Requirement
You need a player in a specific position who can both drop into coverage and rush the passer. I use Lawrence Taylor (95 zone coverage) – he does a great job dropping into a seam flat or hard flat.
Cover Shell #1: Overload 3C (Blitz)
This is my favorite blitz against Gun Bunch X Nasty. I come out in this play first every time.
Setup (Nickel 2-4 out of Chargers playbook)
Call the play: Overload 3C
Add QB Contain – Prevents the quarterback from rolling out of the pocket
User the inside third defender (the middle hook/curl)
Coverage Adjustments
On the back end, choose one of these two options:
Option A: Cover 2 with a hard flat
Option B: Man up the solo defender on the weak side
The coverage shell will look like either of those two looks.
Why This Works
The blitz screams up the A gap or B gap on the left side. This forces the quarterback to roll right. If he's rolling right, he cannot throw across the field to the left on the run. Your four zones (outside third, inside third, seam flat, and hard flat) cover the remaining space. The seam flat does a great job defending corner routes.
The Result
The coverage shell essentially splits the field in half and shuts down the left side. Your opponent must make a super-fast read before the blitz arrives. Most of the time, you'll get a sack, a throw-away sack, a pick, or a forced interception from the QB rushing.
Clip example: As you can see in the clip (inserted here), I blitz Gun Bunch X Nasty constantly and get many sacks and interceptions.
Cover Shell #2: Cover 9 (Match Coverage)
This is my favorite cover shell against Gun Bunch X Nasty when I am not blitzing.
Setup
Audible to Cover 9 (have it in your audibles)
Keep Auto Flip OFF – This is critical
Why Auto Flip OFF Matters
Pay attention to the nickel defender. In our blitz, he lines up to the weak side. When you audible to Cover 9, he goes to the strong side (the bunch side). This is perfect because he will be matching routes coming from left to right.
The "Box Check" Explained
Cover 9 creates what is called a box check. Against a bunch formation, you create a box with four defenders:
The outside deep defender takes the first thing deep and outside.
The inside deep defender takes the first thing deep and inside.
The quarter flat takes the first short outside.
The "through" defender takes the first short inside.
Key Adjustment: Soft Squat
Manually set your outside deep defender to a Soft Squat. To do this: double tap top (triangle or Y), then click circle (B), and select Soft Squat.
Why Soft Squat over Quarter? Many players think Soft Squat leaves the deep sideline open – that's wrong. Here's why it works better:
The quarter flat takes the first short outside route.
The Soft Squat defender takes the second deep outside (corner route, deep out route, etc.).
Soft Squat plays more aggressively than Quarter coverage.
He will jump corner routes and not give up leverage deep.
He can also match a slot fade down the field.
User Assignment
User the inside quarter defender. Your job is to take the deepest man inside. If someone runs a crosser, jump it – that's your assignment.
Backside Adjustment
Put the backside defender in a hard flat to take away the flat route and quick switch route. If your opponent is blocking their running back to pick up pressure, you can keep them in a Soft Squat instead.
Getting Better Pressure (Optional)
You have a few options to generate more pressure: crash your D-line inside to change blitz angles, run a Texas 2-man stunt, or add QB contain off the front side.
Summary of Shell #2
Run Cover 9 with Auto Flip OFF. The nickel defender will line up over the bunch. Set the outside quarter to a Soft Squat. Then user the inside quarter. This is my go-to setup against Bunch X Nasty.
Cover Shell #3: Cover 6 Variation (Bonus Mix-up)
This is essentially Cover 9 from Cover 6. I only run this if the bunch is to the left – otherwise I just audible to Cover 9.
Setup
Audible to Cover 6. Now you have quarters to the weak side.
What You Get in Base Cover 6
You start with one Soft Squat defender, one Quarter Flat to the left (not ideal on its own), a matching vertical hook, and a 3-receiver (3-rec) defender.
Adjustments
First, man up the 3-rec defender to the tight end. Second, soft squat the weak side if you need help with the running back's quick flat route. Finally, user the inside quarter defender.
What It Looks Like
The final shell (shown in the video clip) does a great job at taking away two things: floods to the sideline and floods going from right to left.
When to Use This
Use this as a mix-up or caveat to your main Cover 9 shell. It keeps your opponent guessing and prevents them from adapting to your primary defense.
Summary of the 3 Cover Shells
Overload 3C (Blitz) is best used as your first play or when you want aggressive pressure. Add QB contain, choose either a hard flat or man up the solo defender, and user the inside third defender.
Cover 9 is your go-to when you are not blitzing. Keep Auto Flip OFF, set the outside quarter to a Soft Squat, and user the inside quarter.
Cover 6 Variation works well when the bunch is to the left or when you need a mix-up. Man up the 3-rec defender to the tight end, soft squat the weak side, and user the inside quarter.
